Abutilons

Flowering Maples

Flowering Maples are handsome tropical shrubs in the mallow family with large, maple-like leaves. They have a continuous display, April through November, of pendant, waxy, bell-shaped flowers. In climates with mild winters abutilons can become large shrubs, quickly growing to 4'-8' tall. They are excellent plants for containers, where they typically grow 3'-4' high. In colder climates they can be brought indoors for the winter. Abutilons are readily trained as espaliers or standards and are indispensable for attracting hummingbirds. In areas with hot summers abutilons require some shade and regular watering.

Aurora Small, soft primrose-yellow bells hang gracefully on the strongly horizontal branches. It makes an excellent plant to espalier.

Canary Bird Very large, open bells of soft yellow 3" across. An excellent cultivar that is a free flowering, strong, bushy grower.

Dwarf Red Since many of the abutilons reach a fairly large size, this compact variety is a welcome addition to our collection. It grows 2'-3' tall and as wide with a constant supply of small red bells.

Hare Krishna A smaller abutilon, with compact growth to 3'-4' and clusters of small, pale, apricot colored bells.

Logee's Pink Large, clear pink flowers.

Logee's White Pure white, medium sized flowers on compact plants 4'-6' tall.

Nabob The deepest of the red abutilons with saturated, burgundy-red bells.

Orange Drop Bright orange flowers on a medium sized plant. Very floriferous.

Raspberry As the name indicates the brilliantly colored flowers are raspberry-pink.

Savitzii A small abutilon grown for its variegated foliage. The lax stems hold large divided leaves which are creamy-white, splashed green in the center. This is a very useful plant to use in mixed container plantings. Low growing to 2' tall.

Souvenir de Bonn If you're looking for a large, bold, variegated plant for use in the back of a border or against a fence, this fits the bill. The strongly upright stems carry the large, maple-shaped leaves, broadly bordered with ivory. It will quickly reach 6'-8' tall. The pale orange bells hang on long pedicels.

Teardrop A stunning selection of A. megapotamicum, the narrow red and yellow lanterns are nearly translucent and hang like ornaments along the long arching branches. A fine choice as an espalier or even a hanging basket.

Victory One of the many hybrids with A. megapotamicum which results in a small, more narrow lantern-like flower. 'Victory' displays its red lanterns on slender branches. Makes an attractive shrub 5'-6' tall and 4-5' wide.

Victorian Lady This double flowered abutilon may be a reintroduction of an old abutilon from the late 1800's called 'Lady' which has been absent from cultivation for many years. ÔVictorian LadyÕ was found growing in an old nursery in Adelaide Australia and named by our friend and avid plantsman Rob Peace. The flower is exquisitely shaped with the outer petals encasing the gathered and pleated inner petals, all a soft shade of pink. It is an upright grower with deep green, heart-shaped leaves.
