English Violas
The following are a group of hybrid violas that we call English Violas. Their parentage is that of pansies and viola species from the mountains of Europe. Unlike the annual violas used in bedding, the Englishviolas have been bred to be more perennial. Some are old varieties and others are more recent, includingselections by one of England's leading hybridizers of violas, Richard Cawthorne. They all have lovely flowers, some are exquisitely fragrant, and are wonderful picked for small bouquets. Violas will grow well in full sun to partial shade. Hardy to zone 4. We have many more cultivars in our collection but not in adequate quantities to offer this year. Columbine A charming flower with a white background, marbled and striped with violet-purple. Receives many comments for its unusual markings. Delicia This is a wonderful violetta. The slightly ruffed petals are light purple, shading to a yellow center. The strongly scented flowers are held on 5" stems above the very compact growth. It flowers over a long season. Desmonda A violetta (violettas are violas with slightly smaller flowers) with a long succession of small, scented flowers of blue shaded with cream. A vigorous grower making a mound of flowers and foliage to 10" high and wide. Etain The petals are of pale lemon, margined with violet make this one of the prettiest and sought after of the violas. The fragrant flowers are perhaps the prettiest and the most popular of the violas. Joel Strom A selection by Oregon nurseryman Bert Rokey, and named for his grandfather. This is a strong, long blooming viola with flowers similar to Etain but with more purple suffused into the center. Little David The creamy yellow flowers are highly scented and are held on sturdy stems above the very compact foliage. Magic Early in the season the large flowers are light purple. As the weather warms they become near white with with prominent veining. For us it is a strong grower that tolerates our hot summers. Merlin An apparent cross of Magic and Columbine. It is a beautiful viola with a marbled blue wash and darker rays radiating from the yellow eye. Very magical, it has proven to be popular with our customers. Rebecca The very fragrant flowers on strong, upright stems are cream colored splashed with light purple on the border. One of the best violas. Richard's Yellow The rich, golden yellow blooms open over a low mat of foliage. The slender flowers are very fragrant. Above Violas Each $4.50 Three of one kind $13.00 |
